The Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus was the most celebrated healing center of
the ancient world. Active from the 6th century B.C. to the 2nd century A.D., the hill-top retreat included a temple, theater, gymnasium, and stadium, as well
as facilities for holistic healing, such as numerous springs and watercourses, and the magnificent Avaton, a round building in which patients would spend the
night seeking dreams of healing. The sanctuary always held aloof from war and power struggles and remained true to its original calling.
